THIS YEAR BRITAIN are celebrating the hundred year anniversary of women securing right to vote.
The first major British celebration of women began with the all-female soundtrack to London’s New Year’s firework display. The second, well… It was putting an all-female lineup on Celebrity Big Brother for three days. Slightly cheaper than the first, there’s no denying that.
Four days into 2018, Vogue UK have decided to list the women they believe to be the modern suffragettes.
The lineup includes Sophie Walker (leader of the Women’s Equality Party), writer Reni Eddo-Lodge, Labour MP Stella Creasy, Journalist Paris Lees, Blogger Dina Torkia, artist Gillian Wearing and the founder of online magazine Gal-Dem, Liv Little.
In a video put together by Vogue, the women list out some of their beliefs.
They begin by saying “You know you’ve reached equality when…”
- People are no longer judged by the way they look.
- When women can live their lives without limits.
- When calling something ‘girly’ isn’t an insult.
- Seeing people of colour in all aspects of society becomes the norm.
Then they all offer their opinions on what “one thing that would improve the lives of women” would be. The answers included:
- Society understanding that there isn’t just one way to be a woman.
- More support in terms of motherhood.
- For men to not feel frightened to stand with women in the fight for equality.
- Autonomy over choices that women make.
- If men would behave themselves, hashtag not all men, but a significant proportion.
Transgender journalist Paris Lees shared the preview of Vogue’s seven influential females (the full story will be released in print tomorrow) on Twitter, and wrote:
Look how far we’ve come. It’s insane that I could be in Vogue. A trans kid from a council estate. People at school told me I’d never be a girl, would never be pretty enough, would never be accepted. WELL HERE I AM BEING CELEBRATED AS A WOMAN IN VOGUE FFS!
